Transient Canvas—Amy Advocat, bass clarinet and Matt Sharrock, marimba, perform Nostalgia Variations. Nostalgia variations is 11 “variations” on an original tema that explores a relationship to the feeling of nostlagia, an emotion that has an uneasy relationship with contemporary art. In some sense the piece is an expression of nostalgia for a free experience of nostalgia itself, unmediated by the intellect. The piece, in relationship to variation form, explores melodic, textural, and rhythmic invention, posing the question of how different can a variation be and still be heard as relating back to the original tema.
